How much car parking is provided on the site?
The proposed development is subject to the parking standards contained within Cambridge City Council's Local Plan 2006, which requires a maximum of 1 car parking space for homes with up to two bedrooms and 2 car parking spaces for homes with three bedrooms or more. The development is split into three types of housing, with different parking provisions proposed for each type:
- 8 Private Residential Houses
16 Car Parking Spaces @ 2 per unit - 187 Residential Apartments
158 Car Parking Spaces @ 0.8 spaces per unit - 253 Student Units with 6 staff / visitor spaces
The overall proposed car parking provision of 0.85 spaces per unit is therefore below the Council's maximum policy standards.
2. Will new residents or visitors be able to park in local streets?
No.
The Brunswick site is surrounded by residential areas covered by the Cambridge City Council Controlled Parking Zone, and the new residents will be excluded from applying for permits. Areas outside the zone are considered too far away to be at any real risk of increased parking. The appropriate level of visitor parking will also be included within the site.
3. How will traffic be affected?
A full Transport Impact Assessment (TIA) has been submitted with the planning application and appropriate measures put in place to ensure that the scheme is compliant with policy and standards set out by the County Highways Department.
The TIA outlines the access strategy for the site that has been formatted in direct consultation with Cambridge City Council and Cambridgeshire County Council Highways Offices.
4. What are you doing to promote cycling?
Cambridge has one of the highest rates of cycle use in the country and the city council provides strict guidance regarding cycle parking in new developments. The new development will conform to this policy and provide secure, covered cycle storage to the following standards:
- Dwellings with 1, 2 or 3 bedrooms: 1 cycle space per bedroom
- Dwellings with 4 bedrooms: 3 cycle spaces
- Dwellings with 5 bedrooms: 4 cycle spaces
- Student residential development: 2 cycle spaces per 3 bed spaces and 1 visitor space per 5 bed spaces.
Cycle parking for the flat blocks overlooking the Common is located in the basement with access through onto Walnut Tree Avenue. The design of the site layout allows cyclists easy access to surrounding cycle routes.
5. What other initiatives will you be taking to promote sustainable transport?
A draft green travel plan, as outlined in the TIA, has been prepared and will be given to residents and occupiers to encourage the use of public transport, cycles and car sharing
Berkeley Homes are currently investigating the potential for a car club on site.
